The days of the
full-service gas station are over, and newer cars often go up to
30,000 miles without a visit to the mechanic. It’s up to you to
check the little things before they become big, expensive problems.
Instructions
Step One Check the oil, brake fluid, coolant,
windshield washer fluid, power steering fluid (if you have power
steering), hydraulic clutch fluid level (if applicable), and the
automatic transmission fluid level (if applicable).
Step Two Make sure the dash lights,
headlights, brake lights, back-up lights, and turn signals are in
good working order.
Step Three Check the tire pressure in all four
tires and the spare tire.
Step Four Review the condition of the tires:
look for uneven wear and check the tread depth.
Step Five Look in the engine compartment and
under the car for wetness that may indicate a leak.
Step Six Examine all the belts for cracks. Be
sure to check the inside of the belts.
Step Seven Inspect all the hoses: look for
cracks, leaks, or hoses that are rubbing and may develop a leak.
Step Eight Inspect the battery for corrosion at
the cable ends.
